To add
to the problems here, another Grab occurred from snorklers
in the BB. Items were taken from the cockpit of a boat whose owner wishes to
remain unknown. This was unreported and occurred during the day last week. Most
of the break in's occur at night around dusk and from items left in the
cockpit or around the deck such as anchor and winch handles. One boater
conveniently left them a hammer. They're used to break and pry thru hatches.
This
brings us to 17 in BB in the last two years, but who is counting. Rewards, buy
backs, police contact, discussions with prominent citizens, contacts with the
mayor and or the tourist police bring all the sympathy a person can handle, but
it's useless to expect help.
We've
instituted a program that may be of some assistance. It's boat sitting. If you
wish to stay out in the evening you can contact Tony Pacatte
of Utila Land Company- 504 425 3132. He will provide
you with a cockpit sitter. Lock up your boat, leave on a light in the cockpit,
chips, cokes and nominal prices. This has proven satisfactory in several
instances. Tony wont be available for the next couple
of weeks.
Additionally,
when you get up at night, and we all do, shine a light around the anchorage. It
all helps.
Personally,
We're sorry to see it come to this. We're no longer
comfortable here and planning on going some where else.
